Wizard scouts are the elite, deep-recon forces of the Intergalactic Empire. They are a mix of technology and magic-like abilities.

Richard has been given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become one of these legendary soldiers. All he has to do is make it through the Wizard Scout Academy. But with a TAC officer who hates his guts, will he even be allowed to graduate? To make matters worse, the Empire has been attacked and soon finds itself in a major war. With heavy losses in the wizard scout corps, even the Academy cadets are starting to look good to the Empire's High Command.

Just when Richard thinks things can't get any worse, he is suddenly sent by "the One" to help a beautiful elf priestess fight a demon and its army of undead. Wizard scouts may be the best of the best, but Richard is still a cadet in training. Will his skills and technology be enough to overcome dragons, demons, trolls, ghouls, and various undead from his worst nightmare? With only the aid of his battle computer, Nickelo, and the magic of an elf priestess, will his wizard scout abilities be enough to turn the tide?

With the fate of two galaxies riding in the balance, Richard is honor bound to do his best in spite of the odds. The question is, will his best be good enough?

With the military background of the author, I found myself very disappointed with the main character. He starts out as a mature tough marine that has survived combat, witnessed the death of his comrades and is undergoing extreme training with very little complaint. He is highlighted as having strong combat abilities and demonstrates adaptive thinking when confronted with impossible scenarios.
Then for some unknown reason it all goes downhill when he gets his combat armor and battle computer and is sent on his first mission. He becomes a whiny adolescent that needs constant babying from his AI computer. He becomes as dense as lead, somehow not being able to think logically though the simplest scenarios. It appears that all his years and experience as a marine just disappears. He is belligerent and whines about everything. He get supplied with amazing weapons, specially made for him and again whinges that they're not high tech enough. He disobeys his orders just because he is upset about where he was sent to for his mission and how he was sent there.
The main character constantly uses "Whatever" as a statement. This statement is used indiscriminately and often throughout the book which just ends up being annoying and detracts from the story.

Wizard Defiant Intergalactic Wizard Scout Chronicles Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Rodney Hartman Guy Williams RK Publishing Books Reviews

This book has some clunky dialogue sometimes but the adventure is one to remember. Finished the book in one day and am immediately looking for the others. The main character is relatable but unique enough to feel separate from your mind making you feel like you are getting to know someone. The subtle (maybe not so subtle) elements from other mediums and settings (Halo, Star Wars, DnD, Dragonlance) though fairly obvious are separate and different enough to feel novel. It is a wonderful book to get lost in. Feeling completely new while completely familiar at the same time.
FIVE stars for this book. I seldom award this many stars for the books I read. This story is so interesting I had to make me put it down. I certainly recommend this book to all readers of space opera and fantasy. Thanks
I liked this book, even if it was a bit of a confusing mish-mash of genres. Space, magic, elves, demons, and AI supercomputers felt like a bit too much at times. That said I did enjoy it and immediately picked up the second book in the series.

My biggest complaint is the banter between the MC and the AI computer, it felt forced and awkward most of the time.

Pick this one up if you can keep an open mind and want to challenge the boundaries of space adventure and fantasy.
"Simplistic" would be my one word summation of this book.

Good

- The tec / magic works better than expected, although isn't particularly thrilling
- Basic ideas are sound. Think Master Chief impersonation.

Bad

- Our hero is bland
- Too many clumsy data dumps even within the "school" context. They continue out of it
- Dialogue is clumsy especially between computer and wizard
- Characters are very 1D
- Characters are very stereotyped
- Characters are often dim. Especially our protagonist.
The story is interesting but I had real trouble with liking the main character. I'm not sure if the author was just trying to balance out a the character by giving him some flaws, but it feels as those flaws are contradictory to his own backstory. The "whatever" responses just screams spoiled brat, not former Marine sergeant.

Not sure I will try to follow up the next book.

Maybe if this was as story about Nick the AI having to deal with rebellious man-child, wizard cadet Rick it would work better for me.
Pleasant Read. the main character is developing ok but it seemed rushed in some spots.

Also no Strong secondary Characters formed yet to plot is single threaded.

Fantasy and technology seems to be blending well. Hopefully book two will start to develop some of the secondary characters.
I love it when someone finds a new "take" on magic. This series manages to bring together elements of fantasy with elements of science fiction in a pretty novel way and make it all coherent without losing the thread of story and character. I admire the creativity involved.
As a result the story is interesting in its own right and the concept behind it is fresh and innovative without being distracting. Indeed it is a part of the underlying mystery that seem to link the two volumes together and make me anxious to read the next one.

The writing is not excessively heavy - it's an easy read with lots of action and pretty good pacing. The main character is not terribly introspective and so it is a fun read for an adult but would also work well for a younger reader (not too young, it is implies or even depicts a lot of gore that might be challenging for a sensitive pre-teen, if such still exist) but a teenager could easily enjoy this. To be fair I have been a teenager for about 50 years so I might not be the best judge.

Nice work and I can't wait to read more of the author's work.
